Learn How to Make and Keep Friends

Making and keeping friends can be hard for everyone, but it can be a special challenge for teens with autism.

PEERS is a world-renowned, evidence-based social skills program for teens on the autism spectrum. Developed by UCLA researchers, it is delivered by certified trainers in over 80 countries around the world, including at the Centre.

In this 14-week program, teens will learn:

  • How to enter and exit conversations
  • Choose appropriate friends
  • Handle teasing and bullying
  • Use electronic communications safely
  • …And MORE!

PLUS! Parents will learn how to coach and support their teen.

Is PEERS for You?

  • Participants must be 13-17 years old
  • Must have academic skills at grade 6 or higher
  • Verbal abilities to handle fast-paced instruction
  • Motivation to attend
  • Must have at least one parent (or legal guardian) consistently available to attend sessions
  • Tablets or laptops with internet and video capability for both the participating teen and parent (if taking part in the program virtually)

An initial screening assessment will be conducted to ensure the appropriateness of the program application.

cost

A $100 registration fee is due upon acceptance to the program. Please contact the Centre to discuss the full program cost. The full program cost may be covered by health benefits or FSCD, and can be paid in a variety of installment plans. Centre bursaries are available for those who qualify. Please contact the Centre for further details about pricing.
